Plagiarism Detection and Prevention

·         What plagiarism detection software is available to online instructors?

Just by completing a simple google search you can come up with a number of plagiarism detection softwares. (https://www.google.com/search?rlz=1C1CHFX_enUS485US485&aq=1&oq=plagiarism+detection&sugexp=chrome,mod=11&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8&q=plagiarism+detection+software).  These softwares range from free to paid.  There are different versions which have many different functions.  Some of the softwares check the students work against published worked.  While others are more sophisticated and save all students’ work in a database and check assignments against the database.

·         How can the design of assessments help prevent academic dishonesty?

The design of the assessment can make the difference between whether or not a student is able to cheat.  It will also make the difference in whether or not a student would want to cheat. Assignments that require you to give an example based on an experience you have had or to say how it applies to you personally makes it hard for you to steal someone else idea.  It bring you personally into the assignment.  Also when you remind students to cite the resources they use it help prevent academic dishonest as well.

·         What facilitation strategies do you propose to use as a current or future online instructor?

By simply questioning someone’s reasoning behind their thoughts you can uncover a lot.  Anyone should be able to tell you why they wrote what they wrote and what their thought process was if the ideas were indeed their own.  It is much harder to explain thoughts that were not yours to begin with.  When the expectation exists that the instructor will be looking for me to support and explain myself.  A person will be much less likely to plagiarize

·         What additional considerations for online teaching should be made to help detect or prevent cheating and plagiarism?

Informing students is of the utmost importance to help detect and prevent cheating.  Setting up the expectation for what is considered cheating or inappropriate is a must in every course.  By setting up the expectation and making it clear you can discern that when someone does cheat it was done purposely.  As stated in the media from this week, many times students cheat without knowing that what they did was wrong.

Impact of Technology and Multimedia

Technology creates the ability for us to learn at a distance more effectively.  Prior to the internet distance education involved mail.  Technology and multimedia have allowed us to create very interactive learning experience online.  Technology allows us to connect globally.  It allows us to create asynchronous learning online through the use of web cameras and webcasting.  Technology and multimedia have been invaluable to online learning.

The most important things to take into consideration before implementing technology is user friendliness and technology requirements.  The technology being selected should work for all of your students.  When using technology in online classrooms we have to take into consideration that we may have learners all over the world.  Some of our learners may have spotty internet connections which may not allow them to be online for long periods at a time which could affect their ability to use certain tools.  Also it is important for the technology to be user friendly.  Although two pieces of technology may do the same thing one might not be as easy to use as the other.  For example before this semester we used eCollege for our classes and Walden has now switched to blackboard.  While they both do the same thing I much prefer the lay out and ease of use of eCollege over blackboard.

Learning simulation tools are most appealing to me.  I want tools where the people I am training can get a real life experience but not during work.  I want to be able to get real time information on how they handled situations based on what they have learned.
Integrating technology and multimedia will help create more interactive learning.  Online environments can sometimes seem lonely for the learner.  By properly selecting and integrating multimedia and technology we can overcome those feelings of separation and create real communities of learners that feel a part of their learning experience. According to Mandernach (2009), it is possible that online courses that utilize multimedia to create a more personalized, intimate learning experience may increase student engagement.

Setting Up An Online Learning Experience

What is the significance of knowing the technology available to you?

Knowing the technology available to you is very important because it helps you to know what you will and will not be able to do. If the technology is not there to support certain activities you will know that you cannot use them. Technology tools make it possible to design almost any learning experience that you have designed for face-to-face (Boettcher & Conrad, 2010). It is important to make sure that you yourself as the teacher are comfortable with the technology you are using so that you can help the students.  You should be able to provide guidance in the use of the technology that you are asking the students to use.  It will also help you to know what the technology can do.  If you expect the students to use it for a particular purpose you should be sure that it will work for what you have in mind.

Why is it essential to communicate clear expectations to learners?

Students need clear expectations in order to thrive in their classroom. In order to perform at or above the standards you must know what the standards are. According to a study by Walser (2011), students like clear expectations because they state what is needed and expected of them.  Once students know exactly what is expected they also know what they will be measured against.  They know what will give them an exceeds expectations versus a did not meet expectations.  This is why we create rubrics for courses so that the student can familiarize themselves with exactly what the teacher will use to measure their performance.

What additional considerations should the instructor take into account when setting up an online learning experience?

Instructors should take in to account their audience when setting up the online experience. Certain students work better with different set-ups. It's important to know your students. You would not set up the same class for a group of middle school students as you would for a group of Executive MBA students. "Learners bring their own personalized and customized knowledge, skills, and attitudes to the experience" (Boettcher & Conrad, 2010).  It is important to know this.  For example you may not want to assume the students will understand certain references without knowing their backgrounds.

Online Learning Communities

What are the essential elements of online community building?

According to Dr. Rena Palloff (2012) the essential elements of the online community are people, purpose and process.  By creating the right aspects and combinations of these things i can make a successful online learning community.

People includes everyone involved in the online learning meaning both students and instructors.  The purpose is what everyone is doing in the online course.  The purpose is what unites the people.  The process is the means by which the community is developed and the learning takes places.  You must have all three of these elements in order to build and online community.  Without the people the can not be a community.  Without a purpose to unite the people they would simply be a group of people and not a community.  And without a process the community would fall apart because there would be no structure to keep it together.

How do online learning communities significantly impact both student learning and satisfaction within online courses?

The online learning community is what sets the tone for the student.  It's the same as a neighborhood community.  The community surrounding your home could contribute to whether you love or hate it.  The online learning community can enhance the student's learning experience and create a higher level of satisfaction.  A student could take the same exact class twice and have two completely different experiences depending on the other students and the instructor and the process of the course.

For an example in my undergraduate degree I took Introduction to Biology twice.  The first time I took it with a great faculty member who was the head of the department in a lecture hall with 300 students.  He went the through the information very quickly wrote a lot of notes and it was a very impersonal course.  When I took it the second time there were 20 students in the course and the professor made sure we understood and challenged us to think.  I learned more and was much more satisfied in the second course.

What is the relationship between community building and effective online instruction?

The community and the online instruction are interdependent on one another.  Certain types of communities work better for certain types of instruction.  There is no one size fits all answer.  When developing online instruction it should be known what types of environment the learning will take place.  An asynchronous course may have a different process than a synchronous online course.  Each needs to adapt to the other.  If the instruction and content have been created then the instructor should help the students by creating a process best suited to that type of learning.  And vice versa if the community is already set than the instruction should be created to fit that type of learning community.

How can online learning communities be sustained?

Online learning communities can be sustained by engaging the learners in a way that creates a sense of community to which they would like to belong.  Back to my metaphor of the neighborhood community.  I am sure each of us knows of a community where we would love to live.  If that community were to suddenly change negatively the people would want to leave the neighborhood that they once loved.  The same is true for sustaining online communities.  The people and processes and purpose need to all fit together in a pleasant way for the students.  We want to create online learning communities that students want to be a part of.

What did you learn that will help you become a more effective instructor in the future?

I learned that my role as the instructor is just as important as the learning content.  The instructor can set the tone for the online learning community.  The instructor can monitor the learning community and keep the purpose on target.  As an instructor I can facilitate the experience to help the learners engage with the learning content.  I can ask more questions to prompt more thought.  I can make sure the learners stay on target with their learning.  "What a faculty mentor does makes a difference in what students do- that is, in what students learn and in what concepts and skills students may or may not develop" (Boettcher & Conrad, 2010)There is a great responsibility to me to make sure students have a positive learning experience.
